FOREST AGRICULTURE MANAGEMENT

DO YOU OWN MORE THAN 40 ACRES OF FORESTED LAND?

You may qualify for tax incentives if you have a forest management plan and annually manage your forest to sell firewood, trees, etc. The Colorado legislature enacted a statute that allows 40 acres or more of forest lands similar tax valuation as traditional agricultural lands. This is a voluntary program to manage forest lands to produce wood products e.g. firewood, logs, Christmas trees.

You must have a forest management plan completed by a professional forester that meets criteria for Forest Agriculture Classification.  You manage your land per the ten-year plan and annual work plan to produce wood products for the primary purpose of profit.  The Colorado State Forest Service annually completes on-site inspections.  These tax benefits may be substantial.  The county assessor can help you determine the savings.

Our team can help you through the process by gathering input from you, inventorying your land, and preparing the forest plan to submit for approval.  We can also complete the annual work plan, complete the work, and submit your accomplishment report to the State Forester.  Give us a call for more details.

The Forest Management Plan will also make you eligible to be designated as a Family Forest under the American Tree Farm System.
